Chapter 18 Sports Festival (1)

The most prominent ones other than the basic ones were as follows,

Ace, An epic title earned for being the top scorer in the UA Entrance Exam; Terror, An epic title given for instilling such fear that even villains hesitate to engage with him; The Genii Mentor, A legendary title bestowed upon him for guiding Midoriya to master his quirk and helped Toru gain control over hers; Rampart, A mythical title awarded for the remarkable achievement of tying with All Might in numerous spars, showcasing unmatched resilience and strength; Giant Conqueror, A transcendent title granted for defeating All Might in a no-holds-barred spar,

These together with the rest of the more normal ones, i.e. 15 common, 7 uncommon and 5 rare titles, awarded him a total of 550 achievement points. Furthermore, Shin also knew exactly how the calculation worked as he had witnessed through the earlier notifications, how much achievement points each rank gave. Well except for the unique rank, since he didn’t have any titles of that rank yet. Finally, all together, he had a whooping 1600 AP, for the 5 years that he had spent in this plane.

However, the timing of this particular notification, along with similar occurrences in his past, served to confirm a hypothesis Shin had formulated about the title acquisition mechanism within the system. According to this theory, titles earned after accomplishing certain feats do not immediately come up as notifications, like he had observed the first time. Instead, these achievements are withheld and accumulate silently until he engages in combat.

However, it isn't just any combat; the battle must be one where his opponent harbors lethal intent towards him. It doesn't matter if he wins, loses or escapes; only after the battle concludes, do the notifications for the titles, which had been accumulating appear in the system, and the corresponding achievement points are added to his overall score.

This design was clearly a complex strategy by the system's creator. It cleverly incentivizes active participation in life-or-death scenarios rather than allowing users to remain passive. After all, knowing the exact number of points one has accumulated is crucial for them to strategize for future challenges. This mechanism shows the system's disdain for user inactivity, pushing individuals to engage in battles and other activities to earn further achievement.

Despite this understanding, the underlying purpose behind such a constant push remained a mystery to Shin, and he had no conjectures about its deeper intentions. Still, it underscored the importance of Titles, if the system itself was being this pushy.

Anyway, after contemplating about this for a minute, Shin proceeded to help out the injured classmates together with Momo. About twenty minutes later, All Might arrived together with the police force very very late to the party. Shin with irritation explained the situation from his side. After that, Midoriya also explained, making them all understand what exactly happened. After this, the villains were taken to prison, including the Nomu.

The seriously wounded students, especially Todoroki, Bakugo, Midoriya, and Shoda, were taken back to UA so that Recovery Girl could heal them. This was because their injuries were not very extreme and recovery girl could handle them. However, Aizawa and Thirteen were taken to the hospital for surgeries as they were gravely injured. Thankfully, they were alive and had not perished thanks to first aid given by Momo. The remaining student were dispersed after getting their smaller injuries treated. The UA Academy, due to this incident, even gave the students three days of leave to recover from the scars of the deadly battle.

The next day, all of Japan was hearing about the incident through the news. Reports focused on how a group of villains, calling themselves the ‘League of Villains,’ had infiltrated USJ and how the brave students fought back against the disaster. They also mentioned the Nomu, a weapon created specifically to kill All Might.

The main focus, however, was on Shin. Even though he arrived late, he managed to save the day by defeating the so-called weapon. The news also highlighted how the villains were afraid of him, not even daring to fight him head-on. This incident led people to start calling him 'High Guardian', combining 'High' from UA High with 'Guardian' because he protected everyone from such a dreadful scenario.

  …

In a certain room in UA High,

Some of the prominent teachers were gathered, listening to the report of the investigation conducted by the police force. The one who was speaking, was a person named Kenji, “We didn’t find anyone with the Quirk Decay or teleportation in the records. Those two definitely didn’t register their quirks. The other villains though were easily identified; most were petty thieves or young adults who were unable to enter Hero academies.”

“According to the information gathered from student witnesses, the leader seems to behave like a man-child, getting irritated when anything goes wrong, having delusions, and other such traits making up the sum of his erratic personality. Yet, he also clearly knew much information about Shin Akatsuki, to the point of directly retreating the moment he arrived on the scene.”

Nezu, playing around with his paws, said, "I think the destruction of SUBLIME was probably related to them too. Hence, we can surmise they got their information about him from there."

All Might looking sober, nodded in agreement "You are most probably correct. I also feel the same way."

Midnight, with a puzzled look, slightly leaned forward and questioned, "But how could they know to attack the USJ? They were clearly targeting All Might, according to the reports, and he was scheduled to go there in the first place."

Vlad King, his expression full of seriousness suggested, "I think there is a traitor on the academy grounds. Do you remember the day when the reporters broke in? I think that day someone infiltrated the academy at that moment"

"Yeah, it is probably that incident." Snipe, adjusting his hat, agreed with this opinion.

Tenji continued recounting the details of the incident. This time he spoke with a proud expression, "During the attack, the students performed exceptionally well, especially Midoriya, Bakugo, Todoroki, and Shoda. If they hadn’t come for Aizawa’s rescue, I don’t even want to imagine what would have happened. They are definitely the strongest in the class."

All Might leaned back with a grim expression on his face as he recalled the state Aizawa was in. However, he let out a sigh of relief recalling that they were getting treated by the best and would recover within days. He shook his head a bit, removing his dour countenance and added with a grin, "Well, if we remove Shin from the equation, that guy is on another level itself."

Kenji, exclaimed with excitement with a clap of his hands, "Did you listen to the news? He's all over it. They call him the High Guardian."

Midnight was impressed and commented as she crossed her legs, "Yeah, a very cool title." She continued with a pout, “Ugh why didn’t I get something like that for myself.”

All Might, with a knowing smile, chuckled, "I would say they are all exaggerating if I hadn’t clashed with him myself."

Nezu, looking relieved, concluded with a small sigh, "Yeah, thank God he is on our side," as everyone nodded in agreement, their collective tension easing a bit.

  ……

And so, three days passed quickly and Shin was back in UA.

These three days were quite hectic for him as he had to manage his sudden rise in popularity. His business boomed to great heights. He even completed an expansion goal that he had set for himself. The total worth of the companies he established rose, and he became firmly seated in the top 100 in Japan in terms of wealth.

With the rise in popularity, the amount of influence he had also increased, forcing the Hero Association to accept many pending changes that he had asked of them. This included an additional subject to be taught at Hero academies, which was about Quirk mastery. This information, which was previously reserved for only the top-class heroes and other stakeholders, was now public, at least to some extent. These subjects were only going to be taught at Hero academies, and existing pro heroes could, with some effort, obtain this information.

Coming back to the present, the moment Shin entered his classroom, he was showered with praises from his classmates, who thanked him profusely for saving them. Then they continued their discussion which involved topics such as each of them appearing on the news, how they were the new sensations, and their experiences during that dangerous battle.

As the conversation reached its peak, Aizawa, their homeroom teacher, entered the room, his presence striking because of the plasters and bandages covering his injuries from the previous encounter. He stood before the class, his usual severe expression softened by the relief of having his students safe, and announced their next momentous event - The Sports Festival.

The students who were heard became greatly enthusiastic, and began their preparation for this event. They were all excited to showcase themselves in front of Japan.

The U.A. sports festival was not just a competition; it was a crucial moment in their hero careers. Every professional hero in the country would watch, making decisions on providing internship offers based on the students' performances. This event, occurring only once a year, was a golden opportunity for the young trainee heroes to increase their popularity and acquire valuable experience in the hero course.

Shin was not really excited however, as he knew he would be the champion if he used his full power. Therefore, he decided to limit himself while participating to at least enjoy the event and try to learn something from it. The classes thus continued normally from then on until the lunch break, though the students were filled with great anticipation and excitement which was evident form their faces.

When the lunch break commenced, and Shin was heading towards the door, he felt the presence of a mob outside through his Force Pulse, which he kept active passively at a smaller radius. Upon opening the doors, he saw students from other courses gathered, seemingly to inspect them. His classmates noticed this, and abruptly a student stepped forward and declared war on them. He stated that the coming sports event was their chance to enter the hero course, and this news made his classmates a little anxious.

Bakugo, being Bakugo, however retorted that there wouldn't be any problem if they were at the top. He subsequently declared that he would defeat Shin. This prompted Todoroki to make the same claim, to which Shin smirked and replied that if Todoroki didn’t use his flame side, he wouldn't even get the chance. Todoroki responded that he would use everything he had to defeat Shin.

Shin smiled at both Bakugo and Todoroki and said, "Good luck, you'll be needing that," as he exited the class, with the crowd parting to let him through.

  ……

Many days passed as the preparation for the grand and critical event, the sports festival, were underway. These preparations involved many things but mainly the students focused on either improving their quirk in some manner or understanding the ways to make the most efficient and effective utilisation of their quirks. The burden of the teachers subsequently increased as the students continuously approached them to inquire for different advices and suggestions for their improvements. One of these teachers included Shin himself, as he has proven himself to be an effective one through his helping of Midoriya and Toru for their efforts.

And so, weeks passed, and finally, the day of the sports festival arrived! A huge crowd had gathered to watch the day's events. The festival was to be held at the UA stadium, which was filling up incredibly fast. With a total capacity of over one hundred thousand, the stadium was nearly at full capacity. Security was much tighter than in previous years, due to the USJ incident. UA wanted to make a statement that such an event would never happen again. They had even employed pro heroes as security guards and peacekeepers.

The festival kicked off with fireworks bursting in the sky as students from various courses entered the stadium in their PT uniforms. First, the students from the management, support, and ordinary courses entered. Then, the two classes of hero course students followed with great enthusiasm.

The crowd erupted in cheers when, finally, the most popular class—the one that had defeated the League of Villains—entered the stadium. Cheers roared, and people even shouted their names. Especially the name "High Guardian" was on everyone's lips. Class 1-A, the center of attention, grew more nervous, but they strode forward with determination to perform their best and win. Shin, already familiar to the huge popularity, mostly ignored the cheers, and didn’t deign to respond. Yet, hearing his title being chanted still made him feel ecstatic.

After a short while, the cheers subsided as the main host for the event took the stage. However, the moment her identity was revealed, the crowd erupted once more into loud applause. The men, in particular, cheered enthusiastically, their gazes fixed on the skin-colored, tight costume she wore. It clung to her curves with a sensual elegance, her long purple hair flowing like silk, her small blue eyes shining mischievously, and her enchanting poise exuding an irresistible allure. Yes, the emcee for today was none other than the R18 hero, Midnight.

“WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE LONG AWAITED SPORTS FESTIVAL.” Midnight, in her captivating voice announced, “Today, we will witnessing all the events related to the first year student. So, buckle up your seats and get ready for the crazy ride ahead!” She exclaimed with her hands raised, causing her ample chests to jiggle. Seeing this many students blushed, and half-heartedly muttered complains about her daring dress code. She continued with a foxy smile, “And let’s begin this grand event with a speech from the student representative, Katsuki Bakugo!”

The students from Class 1A were greatly surprised about this proclamation, as they couldn’t imagine Bakugo being something even close to a student representative with his stubborn and hardcore personality. They had imagined that Shin would be the one who would deliver the speech on the occasion. When they collectively looked towards him, their eyes burning with curiosity, Shin laughed it out, “Oh, they did ask me, but I vehemently refused. I, however, didn’t think they would give that job to Bakugo though. Now, I can’t wait to listen what he would say.”

Bakugo stepped onto the stage, facing the entire student body. His expression was fierce as he declared, “I will win. No matter who stands against me—even you, Shin—I’ll crush them. So don’t get in my way if you know what’s good for you.”

Then, without another word, he walked off the stage, leaving everyone speechless. The students wanted to hate his arrogance, but deep down, they shared his determination. Torn between being annoyed and cheering him on, the crowd couldn’t decide how to react.

“Well, well, that was a great speech, albeit a very unexpected one.” Midnight giggled and turned towards the giant screen behind her. The screen immediately lit up and on it was displayed a circle of choices. There were many options about the type of round this could be, totally to approximately 100 types. “Now, let us decide the first event of the day.” The moment she said this, the circle started to spin and the shuffling process began. Midnight waited for a moment and declared, “STOP!”

The spinning immediately slowed down and eventually stopped on a single option. At once, the screen changed, and the title of the randomly selected round appeared in bold letters: “Team Obstacle Rally.” As soon as this happened, a red envelope shot through the air toward Midnight, emerging from a small slot in the gigantic screen. Midnight caught the envelope, opened it, and pulled out a piece of paper. She began eloquently reading out the rules for the event, as outlined on the sheet of paper.

“The students will have half an hour to form teams of four. Each team must consist of one student from each course. Once the teams are formed, the four students will line up at their respective starting points. The order of the rally will be as follows: first, the ordinary course, then the management course, followed by the support course, and finally, the hero course student. Each student will face the obstacle designed specifically for their course. The starting student will hold a baton, which, after overcoming their obstacle and reaching their teammate, must be passed on to the next runner. Out of all the teams, only the first 20 to finish will advance to the next round.”

After announcing the rules, Midnight gave the student the time to select the teams. It was quite hard for hero course to know who would be a good fit for their teams since they hadn’t done their proper research. For this reason, management course students were the one actually recruiting the hero course student. Shin was also approached by many of them, and after a bit of consideration chose the person who felt good enough to his standards, which were quite high.

After half an hour, the rally finally began, with the ordinary course students facing their obstacles. The first challenge was a pop quiz covering history, quirks, general knowledge, and other theoretical subjects. The more than 50 students were each given a tablet on which they would answer the questions. The emcee would ask a question, and the students would type in their answers.

If they answered correctly, they could move 10 steps forward; if they were incorrect, they had to move 5 steps backward; and if they didn’t answer, they couldn’t move at all. The distance from the starting point to the next checkpoint was about 500 steps, so the obstacle took quite a bit of time. Shin’s teammate was the fifth to finish.

The next obstacle was for the management course students, which was similar to the previous one. This time, instead of factual questions however, the students were presented with simulated scenarios and asked to suggest ways to handle them. Their answers were judged by a panel of five, who gave scores out of 50. The aim of the obstacle was to quickly accumulate 500 points. Once they reached that, they just had to run to the next starting point to hand off their baton. Shin’s teammate performed exceptionally well and was able to overtake the others by finishing first, despite the disadvantage of starting late.

Though the events were long, they were quite entertaining to watch. Even Shin himself got a chance to test his own knowledge by listening to the questions that were asked in the rounds.
