Watcher of the Tree of Time

Marc dreams of a massive tree on a plain of golden grass with a night sky holding so many stars it’s like they’re sand on a beach. The roots go on forever and the trunk seems to be infinitely tall. There are branches randomly all over the trunk as far as the eye can see. At the base there is an old man asking a group of young children what they want to do with life, then pointing to a branch and telling them it is theirs, letting them alter their branch as they wish. Once it’s Marc’s turn he decides to bend his branch all the way back until it’s back at its start. The old man seems intrigued by this and simply watches. Suddenly, Marc wakes up. It’s been 15 lives. 15 times he’s regressed back to the day of the cataclysm, 15 times he’s failed to stop the end of the world. He lives thousands, hundreds of thousands of lives until he dreams of being the old man and watching his younger self bend the branch back. He watches other children tell him what abilities they want, altering their branches to match. His is regression, he goes back in time when he dies. Marc simply thinks to himself, maybe this time I’ll get it right. And the cycle continues.
