Chapter 4: Creature of dark magic

The second guard stood quietly behind the first, watching the fight unfold with a cold detachment. As Seren started to attack, she sprinted toward Garrick, her eyes focused and determined. Without missing a beat, she raised her hand above her head, and a ball of fire erupted from her fingertips. The fiery sphere flew through the air, hitting the guard who was about to strike Garrick square in the chest. The impact sent him crashing into the opposite wall of the cavern, where he crumpled to the ground, motionless. His mechanism stopped, but Seren wasn’t sure how long that would last.

Garrick grabbed her hand, pulling her along as they fled deeper into the cave, away from the fallen guard. They ran through the shadows, the light around them growing dimmer with every step. Then, from deep within the cavern, a sound filled the air—like the roar of an angry animal. The noise was distant, but the sheer power of it made the ground tremble beneath their feet.

Garrick immediately unsheathed his sword. "Stay here, and I'll be back," he said, his tone urgent. Seren nodded, and he darted off, disappearing into the darkness.

Seconds later, he returned alone, panting and clearly out of breath. He dropped beside her onto a large slab of rock, his eyes wide with worry. "There are two more guards. They're in a small chamber with the door blocked. We couldn't get to them," he reported, his voice strained. "I had no idea where our next path led..."

He glanced around nervously, scanning the cavern for any signs of danger. Seren followed his gaze, her senses on high alert. The noise they had heard earlier echoed again, louder this time, and the ground beneath them trembled once more.

"I think we're running out of time," she whispered, her voice tense with uncertainty.

Seren pointed to a shadowy tunnel at the far end of the cavern, and Garrick nodded in agreement. They both jumped to their feet and sprinted toward the tunnel. But as they reached it, they found three more guards blocking their path. These men seemed less important than the ones they had faced earlier. Seren couldn’t tell much about them—she had never encountered any of the mages she was fighting before. All the soldiers wore identical dark grey robes with swords at their belts. The only difference was a purple sash tied around the neck of one of them. None of them had any insignia or markings to identify who they were. The leader, standing at the front, barked an order to his men.

Seren’s eyes caught something hanging from the leader’s belt. It looked like a bottle or a piece of glass, but it didn’t make sense for him to carry something like that in the middle of a fight. Maybe he had an accomplice or some hidden weapon. There had to be a reason he was carrying it—perhaps it was a magic artifact or an ancient scroll. It looked heavy, too. Seren glanced up to meet the leader’s eyes, and suddenly, everything went black. The last thing she heard was a scream, and then she felt smoke swirling around her.

When she opened her eyes, she was lying on the cold stone floor of the cave. She turned her head and saw the cave walls stretching endlessly in every direction, dark and silent.

The air around her was thick with white vapor, and everything else was pitch black. No sounds reached her ears—just silence. All she could see were the walls in front of her, but they felt unreal, as if she could pass right through them if she tried. She stayed still, unsure of what to do. The white fog surrounded her completely, and though she couldn’t see anything else, she felt certain she wasn’t trapped by walls. Her instincts told her to stay where she was, but her thoughts turned to Garrick. Would he think she was dead? Had he already moved through this place? Or did he even know she was gone?

She tried to call his name, but only a faint whisper escaped her lips. In the overwhelming silence, even that small sound felt deafening. She hoped he was safe, wherever he was.

  "Seren..."

  “Seren...”

Suddenly, Seren heard a faint voice calling her name. At first, she wasn’t sure if it was real or just her mind playing tricks on her, but then it came again—clearer this time. “Seren!” Garrick’s voice echoed through the fog. There was no mistaking it now. He was calling for her.

Her heart pounded. “We’ve been found out!” she shouted back to him.

“We have to escape!” Garrick’s voice was urgent. He appeared out of the fog, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward the exit. “Come on, we can outrun them, but we need a distraction—something to buy us time!”

They moved quickly through the thick white fog, the sound of approaching footsteps growing louder behind them. For a moment, the noise faded, and then it stopped altogether. Finally, they burst out of the cave and into the open air. Seren glanced over and saw Garrick collapse to the ground, still conscious but clearly exhausted. As soon as she caught her breath, she rushed to his side, dropping to her knees beside him.

“Garrick,” she whispered, her voice trembling. His eyes fluttered open, and he slowly pushed himself up. Then he gasped, his expression shifting to one of shock.

Garrick’s eyes widened in alarm. “Seren, what are you talking about? There was no guard with a bottle or an ancient scroll. You disappeared into the fog, and I couldn’t find you. When I finally heard your voice, I followed it, and we escaped together. There was nothing else.”

Seren stared at him, confusion and frustration flashing across her face. “But I saw it, Garrick! The guard with the purple sash—he had it hanging from his belt. It was real. I know it was!”

Garrick’s grip on her hand tightened. “Seren, think carefully. The fog—it does strange things to your mind. It can make you see things that aren’t there, make you believe things that aren’t real. You were trapped in it for a while. Maybe it played tricks on you.”

She shook her head, her voice rising. “No, it wasn’t a trick! I saw it, Garrick. The bottle, the scroll—it’s the key to the Elemental Convergence. We need it!”

Garrick’s expression softened, but his tone remained firm. “Even if it was real, going back now is too dangerous. The guards are still out there, and we’re not in any condition to fight. We need to regroup and figure out our next move.”

Seren clenched her fists, torn between her desire to go back and the logic in Garrick’s words. Finally, she let out a frustrated sigh and nodded. “You’re right. But we can’t just forget about it. If that scroll is real, it could change everything.”

Garrick gave her a reassuring smile. “We’ll find a way, Seren. But for now, let’s get out of here and tend to our wounds. We’ll come back stronger, and next time, we’ll be ready.”

Reluctantly, Seren agreed, and together they moved away from the cave, leaving the fog and the mysterious bottle behind—for now. But in her mind, the image of the scroll burned brightly, a goal she couldn’t let go of.

Garrick and Seren moved cautiously through the cave, the green glow illuminating their path. The air grew colder, and the silence was broken only by the sound of their footsteps echoing off the walls. The eerie light seemed to guide them, but Garrick couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched.

“Stay close,” Garrick whispered, his voice barely audible. Seren nodded, her eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. The glowing pathway led them deeper into the cave, where the walls narrowed and the ceiling dipped lower. They had to crouch to avoid hitting their heads, and the air became heavier, harder to breathe.

As they pressed on, the green light began to flicker, casting strange shadows that danced along the walls. Garrick’s instincts screamed at him to turn back, but he pushed the thought aside. They were too close to stop now.

Suddenly, the pathway opened into a large chamber. The green glow intensified, illuminating the space with an otherworldly light. In the center of the chamber stood a pedestal, and on it rested the bottle Seren had seen earlier. The ancient scroll inside seemed to pulse with energy, its secrets waiting to be uncovered.

“There it is,” Seren whispered, her voice filled with awe. She took a step forward, but Garrick grabbed her arm.

“Wait,” he said, his eyes scanning the room. “This feels too easy. There’s got to be a trap.”

As if on cue, the ground beneath them began to tremble. The walls of the chamber shifted, and from the shadows emerged figures—more guards, their eyes glowing with the same eerie green light. They moved with unnatural speed, surrounding Garrick and Seren in moments.

“We need to get that scroll and get out of here,” Garrick said, his voice tight with urgency. “Stay behind me.”

Seren nodded, her heart racing as Garrick drew his weapon. The guards lunged at them, and the chamber erupted into chaos. Garrick fought with precision, his movements swift and calculated. Seren stayed close, using her magic to create barriers and deflect attacks. The green glow of the chamber flickered wildly as the battle raged on.

Finally, Garrick saw an opening. “Now, Seren!” he shouted.

Seren darted toward the pedestal, her hand closing around the bottle. The moment she touched it, the chamber shook violently, and the green light began to fade. The guards faltered, their movements slowing as if the energy sustaining them was draining away.

“Let’s go!” Garrick yelled, grabbing Seren’s hand. They sprinted back through the glowing pathway, the cave collapsing around them. Rocks fell from the ceiling, and the walls seemed to close in, but they didn’t stop. They ran until they burst out of the cave and into the cool night air, gasping for breath.

Seren clutched the bottle tightly, her heart still pounding. “We did it,” she said, her voice trembling with relief.

Garrick nodded, his expression grim. “We got the scroll, but we’re not out of danger yet. We need to keep moving.”

As they disappeared into the night, the cave behind them collapsed completely, sealing away its secrets—and its dangers—for good. But the scroll in Seren’s hands held power, and she knew their journey was far from over.

Garrick and Seren moved cautiously through the grand hall, their footsteps echoing softly against the stone floor. The torches cast flickering shadows on the walls, making the space feel alive and ominous. The two guards at the foot of the throne stood motionless, their swords lowered but their presence intimidating. Garrick kept his eyes forward, ignoring the guards as they passed. He could feel the strange energy growing stronger, pulsing in rhythm with his heartbeat, but he pushed the sensation aside. Now wasn’t the time to dwell on it.

“Stay close,” Garrick whispered again, his voice low and steady. Seren nodded, her eyes darting around the hall as they moved deeper. The throne loomed ahead, its fur blanket shimmering faintly in the torchlight. Garrick’s instincts screamed at him to be cautious, but he forced himself to focus on the mission.

“Do you think it’s safe?” Seren asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Her brow was furrowed with worry, and Garrick could see the tension in her posture.

“It’s a risk we had to take,” Garrick replied, though he couldn’t shake the unease gnawing at him. He had never been this deep into the cave before, and the unfamiliarity of it all made him uneasy. The strange energy in the air only added to his discomfort, but he couldn’t let it distract him. The bottle—and the ancient scroll it contained—was too important. And Seren…he had made a promise to himself to keep her safe, no matter what.

As they approached the throne, Garrick’s senses heightened. The energy in the room seemed to hum louder, almost as if it were warning them. He glanced at Seren, who was clutching the bottle tightly, her knuckles white. She met his gaze, and he could see the determination in her eyes. She was ready for whatever came next.

Garrick took a deep breath and stepped forward, his hand resting on the hilt of his weapon. The guards at the throne remained still, but he knew better than to let his guard down. Just as they reached the foot of the throne, the ground beneath them trembled slightly, and the torches flickered wildly. Garrick’s grip tightened on his weapon, and he positioned himself protectively in front of Seren.

“We’re close,” he murmured, his eyes scanning the room for any signs of danger. “Stay alert.”

The energy in the room seemed to shift, and Garrick felt a chill run down his spine. But he pushed the feeling aside, focusing on the task at hand. They had come too far to turn back now. Whatever lay ahead, they would face it together.

Garrick and Seren moved into position, their plan clear in their minds. Garrick took a deep breath, focusing his energy as he prepared to unleash a thunderous blast. Seren crouched low, her fingers tightening around the hilt of her sword, ready to spring into action.

With a sudden, deafening roar, Garrick released the blast. The sound echoed through the chamber, shaking the walls and sending a shockwave through the air. The guards, caught off guard, turned their attention toward the source of the noise, their movements momentarily faltering.

  “Now!” Garrick hissed.

Seren didn’t hesitate. She darted forward, her movements swift and silent as she slipped past the distracted guards. Her heart pounded in her chest, but she forced herself to stay focused. As she reached the far side of the chamber, she turned and saw Garrick already moving, his weapon drawn as he engaged the guards head-on.

One of the guards lunged at Garrick, its sword slashing through the air. Garrick parried the blow with ease, his movements fluid and precise. He countered with a strike of his own, forcing the guard to retreat. Meanwhile, Seren circled around, her eyes locked on the second guard. She raised her hand, summoning a fiery orb that crackled with energy.

“Firebolt!” she shouted, hurling the orb at the guard. It struck true, exploding in a burst of flames that sent the guard stumbling backward. The creature let out a guttural roar, its glowing eyes narrowing as it turned its attention to Seren.

“Over here!” Garrick called, drawing the first guard’s attention back to him. He swung his weapon in a wide arc, forcing the guard to block the strike. The impact sent sparks flying, and Garrick pressed the advantage, driving the guard further away from Seren.

Seren, now facing the second guard, gripped her sword tightly. The guard charged at her, its sword raised high. At the last moment, Seren sidestepped, using her agility to evade the strike. She countered with a swift slash of her blade, the edge glowing with magical energy as it cut through the guard’s armor.

The guard roared in pain, but it wasn’t down yet. It swung its sword wildly, forcing Seren to retreat. She focused her energy, summoning a Flame Blade that materialized in her free hand. The fiery weapon crackled with heat, and Seren lunged forward, striking the guard with a series of rapid blows.

Garrick, meanwhile, had managed to disarm the first guard. With a powerful kick, he sent the creature sprawling to the ground. He didn’t waste any time, driving his weapon into the guard’s chest and ending the threat.

“Seren!” Garrick called, turning to see how she was faring.

Seren was holding her own, her Flame Blade cutting through the guard’s defenses. With a final, decisive strike, she plunged the blade into the guard’s chest, the flames consuming it from within. The creature let out a final, guttural cry before collapsing to the ground.

Breathing heavily, Seren turned to Garrick, a triumphant smile on her face. “We did it,” she said, her voice filled with relief.

Garrick nodded, his expression serious. “We’re not done yet. Let’s get that bottle and get out of here.”

Together, they approached the throne, the bottle resting on the pedestal glowing faintly. Seren reached out and carefully picked it up, the ancient scroll inside radiating power. She glanced at Garrick, her determination unwavering.

  “Let’s go,” she said.

Garrick nodded, and together they made their way out of the chamber, the echoes of their battle fading behind them. They had faced the guards and emerged victorious, but Garrick knew their journey was far from over. The scroll in Seren’s hands held immense power, and they would need to be ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.

Garrick and Seren froze as the creature stepped into the dim light, its glowing red eyes locking onto them. The air grew colder, and the strange energy in the cave seemed to pulse in time with the creature’s movements. It let out a low, guttural growl, the sound reverberating through the stone walls.

“Stay behind me,” Garrick whispered, his voice tense. He tightened his grip on his weapon, his eyes never leaving the creature. Seren nodded, her hands glowing faintly as she prepared to cast a spell.

The creature lunged forward with surprising speed, its clawed arm slashing through the air. Garrick barely managed to block the strike, the force of the impact sending him skidding backward. He gritted his teeth, his muscles straining as he pushed back against the creature’s strength.

  “Seren, now!” Garrick shouted.

Seren raised her hands, summoning a burst of fiery energy. “Firebolt!” she cried, hurling the flaming orb at the creature. It struck the beast square in the chest, the flames engulfing its dark form. The creature let out a deafening roar, its glowing eyes narrowing as it turned its attention to Seren.

Garrick seized the opportunity, striking at the creature’s side with his weapon. The blade cut through the creature’s tough hide, drawing a thick, black liquid that oozed from the wound. The creature snarled, swinging its clawed arm at Garrick. He ducked just in time, the sharp claws grazing the top of his head.

Seren, meanwhile, focused her energy, summoning a Flame Blade that materialized in her hand. The fiery weapon crackled with heat as she lunged forward, striking at the creature’s legs. The blade cut deep, causing the creature to stagger. It let out another roar, its movements becoming more erratic.

Garrick pressed the attack, driving his weapon into the creature’s side once more. The beast thrashed wildly, its claws slashing through the air in a desperate attempt to fend off its attackers. But Garrick and Seren were relentless, their movements coordinated and precise.

With a final, powerful strike, Garrick plunged his weapon into the creature’s chest. The beast let out a final, guttural cry before collapsing to the ground, its body dissolving into a pool of dark liquid that seeped into the stone floor.

Breathing heavily, Garrick and Seren stood over the remains of the creature, their hearts pounding from the intensity of the battle. Garrick wiped the sweat from his brow, his eyes scanning the shadows for any further threats.

“That was… something,” Seren said, her voice trembling slightly.

Garrick nodded, his expression grim. “We can’t let our guard down. There’s no telling what else is lurking in this cave.”

Seren tightened her grip on the bottle, the ancient scroll inside radiating a faint, reassuring glow. “Let’s keep moving. We’re close.”

Together, they pressed on, the shadows of the cave closing in around them. The strange energy in the air grew stronger with each step, but Garrick and Seren were determined to see their mission through. Whatever lay ahead, they would face it together.

"So that's where the monster came from," Garrick said quietly. Seren nodded without speaking. The creature must be the dark golem, the same one they had seen before it woke up. Now, Garrick had another reason to destroy the dark golem: so it couldn't wake up any more. Seren looked at her holographic screen before tapping it.
