Invasion

Vikir and I rose with shock to the explosion from inside the walls, we both ran to the front gate with the other knights. After the explosion inside we heard screaming and a bell rapidly ringing.

“WE’RE UNDER ATTACK, EVERYONE INSIDE CLOSE THE GATE, WE NEED ALL HANDS INSIDE.” Vikir yelled to all the knights.

But before any of the knights could move to close the gate, one of the caravans in line burst open revealing a flood of impish demons with gargoyle features. The demons began slashing and biting anyone they could get there hands on as they made there way to the front gate.

“KNIGHTS OF BRUEFIDEM, PREPARE FOR BATTLE.” Vikir yelled above the chaos.

The knights readied their swords and began cutting down any of the demons that came close to the front gate, fellow adventurers and I also helped the knights, stabbing or shooting any imps we could hit. But the amount of imps didn’t decrease, more began coming from the darkness of the night, along with the imps came wolves with whose teeth protruded like sandworms and their ribs were showing. There was a flood of them coming are way, I knocked arrows as they came, now aiming for the wolves hearts, Vikir took the front with a few fellow knights, cutting down any demon that dared challenge them, and 2 knights were guarding the sides of the gate, making sure no demons could slip past. It was a bloodbath.

After 2 minutes of this flood, the knights were holding okay, but all the people in line to enter the gates had been ravaged by the demons, the onslaught was starting to thin, but it would still be some time before any of us could help those inside the gates, all we could do was turn our backs to the screaming.

Suddenly I heard Vikir yell over the battle.

  “YURI, ARE YOU STILL KICKING!?”

“YEAH, BUT I’M ALMOST OUT OF ARROWS,” I yelled back at him.

  “THAT’S FINE, GO-

Vikir was cut off by the sound of heavy footsteps, out of the darkness, stepped a hulking demon into the light. The demon was 10 feet tall if it stood up straight, it was hunched on two legs, the face of a hyena with a twisted maw that reached end to end, it was barrel chested with paws bigger than a human head, and in one paw was a giant axe that had see many battles.

“KID DO ME A FAVOR, FIND VAL AND PROTECT HER, PLEASE, SHE SHOULD BE AT HOME!” Vikir yelled at him.

“WHAT ABOUT YOU!” I yelled in concern seeing the new foe.

“I PROMISE, WILL NOT DIE HERE, ESPECIALLY TO THIS MONSTROSITY, NOW GO PLEASE, TAKE SOME WORRY OFF MY SHOULDERS, SO I CAN BE SWIFTER IN THIS BATTLE!” Yuri shouted back to me.

“OKAY, STAY SAFE SHAKESPEARE!” I shouted before turning and entering Bruefidem, the last image I saw when I looked back was Vikir lunging towards the hulking demon.

The kingdom of Bruefidem was in chaos, there were fires all over and various flying demons wreaking havoc, the knights and adventurers were trying their best to handle the situation. As I ran through the streets, I notched the last of my arrows into demons as I ran past till I had one arrow left. I didn’t stop sprinting until I reached Vikir’s house, but the house I ate dinner at and slept in so many times was on fire and the front of the house was completely demolished. I ran in through the demolished entrance and saw Val on the ground unconscious and covered in rubble. And worse there was a huge bat towering over Val trying to get to her, without hesitation I notched my final arrow and aimed for the bats heart, bullseye.

But the bat didn’t keel over dead, instead, it let out a scream and turned to look at me, with it’s eyes and mouth spewing fire it stared at me and then it took flight. It covered the distance between us in an instant and slammed me back outside into the chaotic night, I had the wind knocked out of me, but I couldn’t take a moment to compose myself, because the bat was instantly trying to bite at my neck. I instinctively put my left arm out to block it, and it bit into my arms flesh, I let out a scream as it continued to crunch down on my arm, breaking the bone. I used my free arm to unsheathe my dagger, but as I raised it up to strike, the bat pinned my arm down above my head. Both my arms were now pinned, I was helpless and close to having my left arm ripped off, I only had one option.

“FLASHLIGHT,” I screamed into the night. As the words echoed into the night, the faint glow of my dagger became a blinding white flashbang, the white pierced my good eye and blinded me, but I also could hear the pained screech of the bat, as it was blinded as well. I felt the bat's foot release my right arm and it jeered back in confusion. I would’ve lost where it was, but my arm had been pierced so deeply by it’s teeth, that wherever it moved it’s head, I followed. While blinded, my dagger right above my left arm, I felt the dagger pierce flesh and heard a horrific shriek. I did it again, and again, and again, I thrust my dagger into the bat's head and the bat's body fell to the ground along with me, but I didn’t stop stabbing until I no longer heard a shriek in return.

I laid there with the fiery bat on top of me, its fur warmed but it's fire inside died out, my vision came back, but it was a mix of blurry and wobbly. I could see my left arm had been pierced, broken, and had been burnt from the bat's mouth. I ripped my decimated arm from the demon's mouth and pushed it off of me. I got up and walked through the demolished entrance and found Val still under the rubble, but she was now conscious, although she seemed a little delirious. I made quick work with my good hand to release her from her entrapment as the fire was engulfing the house by the second. When she was finally released, I did my best to help her up, but one of her legs was broken, so I instead picked her up and walked out with her over my shoulder. I walked over to the bat's corpse and propped Val up against it and I laid down beside her. I looked around and the kingdom was still a mess, but it looked like the situation was coming to a close soon. I decided to stop worrying and just relaxed my back against the still warm fur of the bat and looked up at the night sky.
