Introduction

  Chapter 1: Introduction

I've always been told I was lucky, but as I grew older, I began to question what luck really meant. Was it those chance encounters, like meeting Mr. Henderson, or was it something more? My father had this saying he'd repeat whenever any of us succeeded at something, 'Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.' I didn't know until much later that he was quoting Seneca, the Roman philosopher. But looking back, it wasn't just his words; it was how they resonated with our entire family's life.

I played my guitar almost every day, not because I was made to, but because there was nothing I loved more than crafting melodies. Olivia was always buried in her books, her ambition for medicine driving her to study relentlessly, while Sophia turned our house into an art studio, painting and designing until the early hours. Even Mom, with her flair for cooking, would experiment with recipes, turning our kitchen into a laboratory of flavors. When my song ended up on the radio or when I decided to join the Air Force, or when Olivia got accepted into Cornell's pre-med program, or when Sophia won her first art competition, we realized what Dad meant. Those weren't just strokes of luck; they were moments where our passion and dedication collided with opportunities we couldn't have anticipated. His mantra shaped all our lives, teaching us that what others might call luck, we saw as the result of countless hours of our own doing. We were prepared, not because we had to be, but because we wanted to be.

This book is about how I earned my nickname, "The Luckiest Dog on the Porch," a title that's followed me my entire life. It started with small things, seemingly insignificant moments that, in retrospect, feel like strokes of incredible fortune. A chance encounter with a neighbor who became a lifelong mentor. My acceptance to an Ivy League university, facilitated by family connections and a network of supportive friends. These were the building blocks of a reputation, a perception of effortless success.

Except for a few occasions, I always passed the idea baton off to someone else to carry out the actual execution. Not this time. These are my words, my recollections, my history, unfiltered. No editor, no ghostwriter, zero revisions based on others' input. It would likely be better and easier to read if someone else had written it, but this is my story. There are parts that could have been less wordy, and it could have been much longer, too. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed living—and now, memorializing—my life.

But there were also moments of genuine hard work, of calculated risks, of preparation meeting opportunity precisely as my father described. And there were times when things went less than hoped for, when the narrative took unexpected turns, when the line between luck and skill blurred. This book explores all of that.

This isn't just the story of one event, or even a series of fortunate events. It's the story of a life lived, a life shaped by both genuine luck, not stupid luck, by moments of extraordinary fortune and less than fortunate outcomes. It's a story that stretches far beyond any single headline or snapshot. It's the story of how I became "The Luckiest Dog on the Porch," a story that began long ago, and continues to unfold. It's a story I'm finally ready to tell.
