The Child Of Light.

  ...

The boy opened his eyes and lay quietly.

So, it was true. I did ask for these powers. And also the prices that came with it...

He sighed and to recollect himself.

New memories flooded the boy's mind as if another dam had burst open. With it, came another piece of his clouded past.

I asked for two powers. Word magic, and a sixth sense to warn me whenever my life's in danger. That explains the warning.

And the prices I must pay in order to have those powers are, having all my senses sealed. And every three years, one of them along with another piece of my memories will be restored.

But now, at least I had the gist of what I must deal with in the future... The forces of the abyss...

The images he saw in his memories lasted merely a split second, yet the terror that was imprinted within the memories was vivid and thick enough for the boy to feel the weight of it.

Thank god, I've been grinding my ass off every day.

He closed his eyes tight and chased away the disruptive thoughts, to calm himself. When he felt a bit better, he took a quick glance once again toward the maid, who was reaching out for the curtains to open them.

"Hum~ hum~." She was humming gently while doing her duty.

So, If the math's right, then I should be six by now. And the second sense that got healed is my sense of hearing.

Can I... Yeap, I still can't speak... Well, it is what it is. He was a bit hopeful that wasn't the case.

"Young master look great today as well! Let's get you cleaned up, shall we?" The blond approached the bed with a soft smile.

Fortunately, I can understand the language. The boy felt his mood got better.

Raise my hand. Point to my ears. And thumb up. He also noticed the connection between the word magic and his imagination became a lot smoother and better. Which was a boon for him.

Now, he looked like someone who could move his limbs by himself, instead of looking like a puppet with a string.

"Yes? What are you saying, young master?" The maid blinked and asked back, confused by the sudden gesture.

Repeat my action earlier. My ears are good. I can hear now.

He tried to convey his thoughts to the maid as best as he could, repeating his gestures over and over again, but the maid never got it. Instead, she got even more confused.

Ha... Wait. Will this work? How did it sound again? Dam, da dam, da dam~ Yeah, that's it.

Recalling the rhythm of the song that the blond maid sang earlier, the boy eyed the sturdy straw the maid had prepared beforehand for his breakfast.

Lift the damn straw and hit the edge of the bowl like this. He vividly pictured the rhythm in his minds and let the word magic do the rest.

And thanks to his newfound control, he was able to pull it off successfully, as the straw hitting the edge of the bowl and sent a clear ringing across the room.

Once again. Hit the bowl with the straws with that rhythm.

Once, twice and thrice. He repeated it a couple of times before the maid's eyes widened in shock.

  She almost shouted in excitement.

"Young master, you can hear me!?"

  Nod softly. Yes, I can.

  His head bobbed in accordance.

The maid held her hand on her mouth, hiding her mouth as she took a deep, sudden breath.

"I- I'll be right back!" She said out loud.

And with that, she bolted out of the room.

What now...? Let's just train, I guess...

  Increase my--

"Alex, Alex! Can you really hear me!?" Asked the girl, still in her sleepwear.

The boy blinked twice in a row instead of using magic to move his neck to nod.

"Mom! Dad! He really can hear us!"

"Oh George! Our baby! Our baby can hear us!" His mother's eyes glimmered with tears that threatened to fall down, hugging her husband for comfort.

As for the man himself, he clasped his wife's hand and locked his gaze on the boy.

  "Alexander." He called out gently.

Alex blinked once and slowly at the call.

"Can you truly hear us?" Asked George.

Alex blinked twice to answer his father's question.

"Oh, my baby! My son!" His mother couldn't hold herself back any longer at that point. She kissed Alex on the cheek and his head. Holding him close as if she was afraid he might run away from her.

"Maya," George called out to his wife.

  "Archbishop Walter is here."

"Leave them be for a minute, Duke Dawson, I can wait." Replied the old man in a white robe.

So he was a priest. Thought the boy, peeking towards the familiar man who treated him back when he spat out blood.

"Uncle Walter. Look, look! My baby. He can hear now! Three years ago he can suddenly see, and now he can hear. He's getting better, isn't he?" Maya took the man's hand and squeezed them with hopeful eyes, looking for an answer she wanted to hear.

"Ahem. Maya, first, let go of the Archbishop's hand and--" George feinted a cough at his wife.

"It's okay, Duke, as you know, Maya and I go way back. Just treat me merely as the priest that I am." Said the Archbishop.

"That's not it, Archbishop..." George's eyes swam awkwardly. "Can you please check on Alexander first?"

Both Maya and Walter's eyes widened in realization.

"Ah! This is why getting old is troublesome. Look at my forgetful bones."

Maya and George then gave way to the old priest. He started by looking at Alex and touched his ears and the surrounding area.

After that, he moved to the rest of the body, checking if there's anything unusual.

"His complexion do look better compared to the last time." Walter nodded in satisfaction.

"You mention in the letters that the mana movement around Alex is unusual, does that means he can use magic? At his age and without a prior teaching?" Asked Walter.

Mana movement... The boy took note mentally of the word.

"Yes. Do you think that have anything to do with his situation, Archbishop?" Replied George.

"Hard to say." Hummed Walter low, while taking Alex's hand to check for his pulse once again. "But maybe I can find something out now that I'm here. It must be predetermined by the Great Light."

When he was done, he looked at Alex in the eyes and asked, "Can you show me how you use magic, Alex?"

Alex took in his words and immediately sank to his own thoughts.

Should I? Can I trust him? Well, they seem to... He glanced towards his parents, weighing his options.

Trust or not, the thing I needed the most for now is information. Maybe he will spill something more about this mana and whatnot. Besides, it can't hurt to build a favorable impression on a potential allies for the future.

So, Alex blinked at the man.

As for the spell... Ah, let's go with that. Create a ball of light in front of me. Yes, now hold it there.

"By the Light!" Walter exclaimed, his eyes shot wide, and his jaw hanged opened.

"This is- This is... He must be it... He must be the chosen one! The child of Light!"

I'm the what now!? At that moment, Alex regretted his decision to show his power.
