Prologue

  Alice turned on an audiobook and wrapped herself in a blanket. She closed her bathroom door and sank to the ground. The vinyl cabinet felt solid behind her, and seconds searching in the dark found her tablet. She paused, her face illuminated by the lock screen. For a moment it hit her, everything she was avoiding; just as quickly it was gone. She entered her password and downloaded Pinterest. Her actions were rote.

  Alice opened the app, then a folder: Wisdom, philosophy, and esoteric nonsense. The screen was a field of text and grays. She pressed on the first post.
