Stuck in the dark.

Kai Vesper brooded like he always did, he got put to some serious, grueling work as a prisoner. Ten hour shifts, six days a week, the most monotonous, menial soul crushing work he had ever had to put up with.

Something those otherworldlers had come up with and put in place before the war. He was actually earning his keep in prison. He would have funds to start his life over once he got out. This was a way for the prison system, managed by the Jennies to be economically solvent, without having to rely on taxes.

It was an ingenious system really, it bloated or shrunk organically depending on how many prisoners were present at any time. The sight of a Jenny was rare, most guards were in fact prisoners, earning their rights back as citizens. As a prisoner he was told the only right he had, was his life. Everything else, was forfeit. It had shocked him to his core.

Law enforcement had always been something he scoffed at for the most part. Jennies, global or not, dealt with petty crime, handing out fines or putting someone in jail for a few days to cool off and community service was all you were ever threatened with. Nothing and no one, had prepared him for the heavy crime penitentiary.

These last 2 months he questioned everything that had lead up to him getting imprisoned for 7 years. A harsh sentence but the global jenny police force had come to collect their due, they had gathered a long list of the crimes him and his partners had committed over the last 3 years.

Their Illegal catch, breed and release gig, tax evasion, a laundry list of petty theft, breaking and entering, disturbing the peace, harassment, etc.

The league of Orre, the rangers, the Jennies and even that front company of the Cipher crime ring, had pressed charges.

Which confirmed a few things for Kai. Him and his 2 partners had stepped on the toes of Cipher ring with their illegal breeding back in Orre.

Stupid Sara just had to be greedy and wanted to expand their business and got the Cipher gang involved without realizing, ignoring all his warnings of caution.

The only silver lining, was that he still had most of his trading credits stored away on an anonymous account, it had been his personal exit strategy.

None of it mattered now. He was stuck in prison for 7 years. His Pokemon were released after a psych evaluation. He lost them all which hurt him the most. These weren’t his starters but it still left him empty and drained enough, that he had suicidal thoughts, again.

The only thing that currently kept him alive was his intense loathing for Sara or Ravanna, her current official name.

The way she threw him and Jasper under the buss the moment she could. That moment still had him seething. He despised her ever since they left Orre, slowly growing to hatred but had sort of depended on her to not sit down somewhere and die after he lost his first team back in Orre. In that Courtroom his hatred for her fulminated, he had to remain alive to see her dead.

Thinking back on it, every wrong turn the three of them took, could be attributed to her bullshit. He had kept them out of trouble with cunning wit and his personal blood sweat and tears, coming up with ways to get them out of tight situations every single time.

“And every single time I followed her into the bullshit like an absolute idiot, fuck.” He whispered to himself while working the factory line.

He was a latent fae. A trainer with potential to train Fairy types. Most fairy types were whimsical, changed their minds based on the direction of the wind. It meant that any trainer with that latent ability needed to travel a lot. Become that wind the fairy Pokemon wanted to glide on. He didn’t have the drive for that, Sara did.

So he followed around his high school crush Sara, Fairy types responded to strong feelings. He had a full team in no time, hell he was respected back then.

His starter raltz who simply showed up one day, evolved early into a Kirlia and had dazzled his opponents. She had been an odd one, even among fairies. Fairies usually responded strongly to positive emotions. Not his Kirlia. She consumed all of it, the stronger the better. It fed her strength. She was ruthless.

All fairy were odd in his opinion, they frightened him more then any other type, they had no limits to their emotions.

His Kirlia was a devilish, cruel and capricious character. Perfectly fine with his illegal activities. She encouraged it in fact. She was his true partner in crime.

Her psychic abilities were incredibly handy in communicating with pokemon. Oh his poor Kirlia. She had uncharacteristically thrown herself into the maws of that houndoom.

He still had nightmares, seeing her frail body get cooked then ripped to pieces by that frightening monster.

What fucked him up full circle, in her last moments she had conveyed her true feelings for him. Her own unrequited twisted love for him. It was utterly overpowering and overwhelming, burned into his psyche. Her plans to take him deep into the wilds when evolving into Gardevoir, away from prying eyes, so she could have him all to herself. It also conveyed to him in that instant. How much his Kirlia loathed Sara. All these feelings and thoughts were psychologically imprinted on him. In her own way, his Kirlia wanted to truly be one with him.

That Trauma never left. His own hatred for Sara began to fester in that moment, guided by the psychological echo of his Kirlia. Looking back with his head clear and having some clarity he saw how blind he was to her blatant manipulation in the early days.

How she was perfectly aware of his feelings for her, how she didn’t appreciate it once and used it selfishly for whatever she wanted. Like a Mawile she pretended to be cute luring him in. How stark the difference was with who she used to be and what she turned into.

It was him and Jasper or Steve as was his official name, that helped her get out of some serious trouble, 3 years ago.

That’s where everything went wrong. It wasn’t just the Jennies that were after them. That’s what caught the three off them, off guard.

The fallout of that encounter, which he now knew was the cipher gang, cost them their Pokemon. All dead as they got crushed by superior numbers and moves none of them even knew existed.

Running for the hills and managed to illegally cross the border as stowaways on an official cargo ship. Changed their names and started their new life. Homeless depressed and suicidal from the death of their teams. They stole enough funds together to get a few pokeballs. Ran around in the indigo league never really knowing who they could trust.

The only thing that they had left over was an egg of Sara’s dead starter. She loved that little spinarach but completely coddled it. Never wanted it to fight strong dangerous opponents. Their competitive strength, passion and desire, gone. Mirrored in the mediocre Pokemon they gathered. They simply lacked the drive as trainers.

She cried and screamed in the courtroom for them to not separate her and her spinky but the psych evaluation showed the court that her personality was not in a state where it could handle Pokemon.

He sighed, the worst part had been seeing his Pokemon choose to leave. All of them.

Thinking of that he began to cry, losing Pokemon seemed to get worse the more it happened, remembering his Kirlia again, pushed him over the edge.

A nearby guard scoffed. “What are you crying about? Sad you lost your Pokemon? Should have thought of that before you conspired to kill somebody, you coward.”

Kai felt tears running down his face, he didn’t have the energy to try and correct them, that he had no idea Sara was going to do that. He should have known but he didn’t.

”Hey kid I know it sucks but it’s what it is, your fairy tale of going out meeting likeminded souls is over, gone, best you accept it.” A gruff older man who was working next to him grumbled.

Kai tried to nod but kept crying, hicking trying to breathe but his midriff spasmed erratically. while continuing his monotonous work in this godforsaken factory.

”Is it true what that ahole said? You a stone cold killer?” The gruff man asked.

”Shut up brad and work! You know the rules!” The guard yelled.

Kai shook his head, wiping his tears away, “No, I just got dragged along for the ride because of a manipulative evil bitch.” He whispered so the guard didn’t hear. Another prisoner who had remained quiet, across the factory line Kai stood at, scoffed and shook his head.

”You would think they would teach kids how to handle basic manipulation tactics with what pokemon can do. So, you here cuz you dumbass was desperate for some pussy? Did you at least get some?”

He was a foul looking man in his thirties. A nasty smirk on his face when Kai didn’t respond fast enough.”

”Fuck that’s rough, sorry to hear that kid.” He made his tone emphatic but his face said he was enjoying the pain written on Kai’s face. Some other Criminals close enough, started to chuckle.

“Yea women suck, always manipulating, honest to Arceus, some of em don’t even realize they do. Best to stick to the men.” Brad said in a semi comforting tone.

”Maybe.” kai said distracted. “So what are you in for?” Kai asked, trying to make conversation.

“Oh you know, nothing too bad.” He said licking his lips looking at Kai. Kai felt a shiver run down his spine. “Perhaps you and I should sit next to each other during dinner, I can tell you all about it.” Brad continued.

  Kai’s mind went blank.

”Fucking hell Brad! You disgusting piece of shit. You give crooks a bad name! Guard! Brad’s at it again!” The foul man yelled.

The guard reading his book got up angry and grabbed his baton. “Alright Brad you earned yourself another month in solitary you disgusting piece of garbage.”

“Hey if the kid is willing, who are you to stop me from having some game!?” Brad yelled.

  Twack!

  ”OWW! FUCK! Fuck you!”

  Whack! whack!

Brad was getting hit repeatedly by the guard, “you gonna walk to the Jenny!? Or do I need to beat you and drag you to her!?” He yelled fuming.

Brad held his nose and nursed his arm swelling already from getting hit while protecting his face, but he began to walk, while getting whipped by the guard.

Kai was shaking. Pale as a ghost. This was the first time coming face to face with such blatant violence against people.

”w-wh-a j-j-j-just h-happ?” He couldn’t finish his sentence, his body began to shake, something he couldn’t stop. The nasty looking man sighed and yelled at another guard. “Yo! This dumbass is going into shock! Ima sit him down for a bit!” The guard grunted and waved him off. The man deftly crawled under the factory line and guided Kai to a nearby bench. Some of the other criminals mimicked Kai’s shaking, earning ugly looks from the other guards, and laughs from the other prisoners.

Kai kept stammering gibberish, till he finally managed to say something.

”w-w-what dddid he mean with sit next to me? W-Why did he have such a creepy face?” He stammered.

The man smiled darkly. But didn’t respond.

“Why did that guard beat up Brad?” Kai asked still shaking. Now the nasty looking man sighed.

“Brad is here for life. He took a liking to male pokemon. The underage kind. Any way he can relieve himself of his vices he takes. Here he developed a liking for young guys with a boyish look like you. He likes it when they struggle.”

The smack down of this harsh reality, while he was emotionally vulnerable made him go sick.

”He’s already extended his sentence by 3 lifetimes. The one thing that is not allowed not even for the Jennies, is an execution. They simply hope one of the guards loses their cool on him and solve the problem that way.” He smiled darkly. “I wouldn’t count on it. No one wants to extend their stay here by another 20 years.”

He looked at Kai, seeing Kai unable to process, he continued.

”This is your life now kid, get used to it. Make sure you don’t show that sort of weakness with Brad, it gives that sick fuck a boner. Do it again and it will be on you.”

He left and went back to his work. Kai looked around, all the prisoners smiled dark, cruelly or blew him kisses, one or two had the same creepy smile as Brad.

“I need to go to the bathroom!” He ran as quickly as he could.

All prisoners working at the line, hollered. Riling up the guards who starter whacking people to get back to work.

”Look at that! told ya Brad would get the kid to puke today! That pot is mine!” A burly man yelled, laughing and hollering, while getting whacked by the guards.

Kai got to the toiled bowl and retched out his breakfast. He locked the door and let himself go, wailing away. Some prisoner came in and left shortly after he heard Kai sobbing.

”whoo! I win the second pot! Sweety is crying his eyes out!” He yelled loud enough for Kai to hear past the door.

He cried more, he no longer cared. He wasn’t keeping track of how long he sat there, hugging a toilet bowl. He began to shiver, there was a drop in temperature. He gathered up his mind and looked around. Leaving the toilet stall looking around the rest room. A black hole opened up on the wall. He knew what that was, a pokemon move, he grabbed the exit door but it was locked, or more precisely. It was frozen and he couldn’t move.

Two pokemon walked into the room. He felt his soul leave his body. The Mimikyu he recognized immediately, something every ranger warned you about, unless you were a veteran with a solid veteran team to deal with wild Mimikyu, an encounter with one would usually be lethal.

He looked at the second Pokemon that walked into the room. It was a Morgrem, it looked very familiar for some reason. A light went up in his mind.

”Impy?” He whispered. The Morgrem smiled wickedly and grabbed the sack, Mimikyu used to hide his true body and yanked it up.

Kai felt his mind and soul fall into an endless abyss.
