Volume 1 Chapter 1 Crossing Over
"Uh-huh"; The person on the bed showed signs of waking up, having worked overtime until almost 3 am last night. Lin He felt that this sleep seemed to have lasted a long time, fortunately it was very comfortable, dreamless, and he hadn't slept so well in a long time. Since starting work, every day's work and life pressures had been suffocating him.
The older generation always says that people born after 80 are good, haven't suffered much, and basically grew up in a sweet environment. But reality isn't as good as they say it is. People born after 80 have better lives, but their material demands are also higher. Because of this, they can only work hard to earn money, or else they'll be eliminated by this materialistic society. Ugh, don't want to think about all these messy things anymore. If I don't get up this weekend, I'll sleep the whole thing away. I've also made plans with friends to relax and have a good time together.
She opened her eyes and Lin He didn't react for a moment, where was this place? A room of less than 10 square meters, with a bed opposite, which couldn't be called a bed in the strict sense, it was just a wooden board on top of some bricks made from earth. In the middle of the house was an old and shabby four-square table, with several equally old stools, two bowls without mouths on the table, and she herself was lying on a wooden board bed, covered by an old quilt that had lost its original color, a thin cotton quilt that wasn't much better than a single sheet.
Where is this place? Logically, I should be living in my own one-bedroom apartment, although the decoration wasn't luxurious at first, but it was very cozy. What's going on here? Oh, right, I seem to have overlooked a very important issue - my hands and feet don't seem to be those of an adult, they're so small. Lin He tried hard to shake her head, still couldn't remember anything else, just felt a headache.
Just then, a woman walked in from outside. The woman was wearing tattered clothes, with her hair tied back with a wooden pin, and Lin He seemed to have seen this kind of hairstyle on TV before - ancient women would tie their hair up after getting married. Upon closer inspection, the woman's facial features were quite good: big eyes, double eyelids, a straight nose, a melon-seed-shaped face, lips that were neither too thin nor too thick... except for her pale and emaciated complexion, which clearly indicated malnutrition.
The woman walked up to her and held her in her arms, asking softly, "Er Ya, does your head still hurt? If it's better, get up, Dad and Mom are going out to work, you stay home and take care of your younger brother and sister, breakfast is outside, go eat when you get up."
Lin He was momentarily at a loss for words and simply nodded her head. After the woman left, Lin He pinched herself to make sure she wasn't dreaming. She thought to herself that she must have caught up with the trend of crossing over into another world, but she couldn't understand why others had to die before they could cross over, yet she was able to do so just by sleeping for a while.
However, she soon accepted the fact that in her previous life, she had no family and grew up in an orphanage. Because she was not clever or pretty since childhood, she was not very likable. In the orphanage, many children around her were adopted, but she grew up to 18 years old without being adopted. She worked hard to study and finally entered a not-so-famous university. After graduating from college, she worked for several years and still didn't have a boyfriend. Thinking that crossing over wasn't so bad after all.
From what that person who claimed to be her mother said, it seems like she has many family members after all, so at least she's not an orphan. Since she's here, then let her live a good life in this world.
She got up and walked to the door, looking around at where she was. In front of the house was a large courtyard with four earthen houses, their roofs covered in thatch. It seemed like two were living quarters, one was a kitchen, and the last one was probably for storing miscellaneous items. The courtyard was quite spacious, but there wasn't much in it, just empty space. As she looked around...
A little girl ran over and called out "Sister!" The little girl was about four or five years old, with messy hair and wearing a faded floral cotton-padded jacket that had been patched up several times. She also looked pale and thin, probably due to long-term malnutrition. Lin He had just crossed over and didn't have any memories of this body's past in her mind.
She responded with a soft voice to the little girl and said: "Hmm, my head hurts a bit, it seems like I've forgotten many things. You call me sister, what's your name then? How many people are in our family?"
The little girl's big eyes flashed a hint of sympathy, but she immediately pulled Lin He to sit on a small wooden stool and said: "Sister, you were pushed down by the second dog in the next room yesterday, your head hit the wall, so now you have a headache. Later, the second dog's mother even invited a doctor to check your head, the doctor said that when you wake up, you may forget some things, so today my mother wants me and my brother to stay at home to take care of you."
Lin He rolled her eyes. A five-year-old girl and a boy who was less than four or five years old, how could they take care of someone? It's really... After a while, the little girl continued to say: "You're called Er Ya, I'm San Ya, at home there are Dad, Mom, older brother, and younger brother. Younger brother just went out to play, later we'll go find him. Older brother is an apprentice in a blacksmith shop in town, he can only come back for two days after a month. Dad and mom have gone to work in the fields." Oh, Lin He finally had some understanding of this family. Looking at how young this little girl was, asking about other things would probably not get any answers, it's better to just slowly understand on her own.
Lin He then said to San Ya, "San Ya, wait for your sister, I'll go with you to find our brother, I'm going to wash my face." San Ya nodded.
Lin He walked to the shortest thatched hut, she thought it should be the kitchen, took a look at the kitchen, and found nothing inside either. There was a large stove made of earth and clay, and a rack made of several wooden boards, on which were placed several bowls with holes in them, and a few objects resembling twigs. Lin He thought they might be chopsticks. What kind of home is this? So poor that it doesn't even have chopsticks.
She walked to the edge of the water tank, where there was a wooden ladle-like thing that should be used for scooping water. Lin He filled a ladle with water and then ran outside the yard. In the water, she saw her own reflection, which looked like it had been inherited from her mother, about 70% similar, probably around 7 or 8 years old, with a look of long-term malnutrition, very thin, but still showing a clear and delicate face, with all five features well-proportioned. There was a wound on her forehead, about 2-3 cm in size, which should have been caused by being pushed against the wall by that good-for-nothing.
Lin He was quite satisfied with this body, at least 20 years younger than her previous life, and also more beautiful than before. She thought that the heavens must have felt sorry for her being so lonely in her previous life, having no family or many friends, so they gave her a chance to be reborn. It seemed that the heavens were not treating her badly after all. She washed her face with this water, and the coldness made her shiver, but she also became more alert.
After doing all this, I walked to Sanp's side and said, "Let's go find our brother."
"San Ya said: 'Sister, you haven't had breakfast yet, the breakfast is on the table in mother's room, you eat first, mother said your head was injured and you need to eat something to nourish yourself'."
Lin He listened and touched the little girl's head, feeling very moved. In her previous life, she was an orphan with no one to care for her, but now someone finally cared about her. She nodded and walked into another house, where she saw a white steamed bun and a bowl of what looked like rice porridge on the table.
In her past life, Lin He was a southerner who didn't like eating flour food, but it was okay to have some for breakfast. Who would have thought that such a poor household could afford white steamed buns? Were all those stories about crossing over into ancient times fake? They said that in the old days, white flour was very expensive and poor people couldn't afford it. How could this poor household still afford to eat white flour?
