3.3 Leos Team

Hours passed as Leo sifted through endless messages, seeking any sign of players who stood out from the rest. He was searching for something specific: players who were unique, eccentric even, with skills that would give him and his team an advantage over the thousands of others in the game. But it couldn’t just be skill. He needed teammates with the right kind of obsession, people who saw Stone Chronicles as more than just a game.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he narrowed down a list of possibilities. Each of these players was unconventional, individuals with unique backgrounds and gaming styles that set them apart. He sent messages, set up brief meetings, and slowly assembled the team he believed could help him reach the Lost Megalith.

His first message went out to Nexus, the Strategist.

Nexus, real name Kayla, was the first on his list. She was a competitive gamer with a reputation for her razor-sharp strategy skills. Nexus had a record of leading teams to victory in games known for their complex tactical challenges. More than that, she was known for her ability to adapt to the personalities of her team, molding her strategies around their unique strengths. Leo had been impressed by her history with puzzle-based games and her unusual obsession with ancient history. In their first conversation, she’d casually referenced the alignment of stars in Norse mythology and the defensive strategies of ancient Chinese warriors.

â€śListen, Leo,” she said, her voice confident, “if you want to be first to unlock five Megaliths, you’ll need someone who can strategize. This game’s based on myth and lore, and I’m the best you’re going to get. You need me.”

He didn’t doubt it. Nexus wasn’t just a skilled player; she was someone who understood that Stone Chronicles was more than a simple RPG. And although many people guys were put off by her bold and confident manner, she always delivered. So much many of the other teams didn’t even want her on their team for fear shw would take over their guilds. She naturally saw the game’s connections to ancient history, folklore, and myths, and that knowledge always gave her the advantage.

Next was Cipher, the Lore Keeper.

Cipher, or Max in real life, was the second player Leo recruited. Known for his encyclopedic knowledge of lore across multiple gaming franchises, Cipher was a hardcore lore enthusiast who lived for the stories and mysteries hidden in games. The hidden gems. He’d studied every mythical location in Stone Chronicles and could recite the backstory of every major artifact, creature, and land in the game. Rumor had it that he even had documents on rare historical languages in case they were ever needed.

When they first met online, Cipher’s excitement was palpable. “Leo, I know the ten locations inside and out. Did you know that Antartica’s ice caves are inspired by real underground glaciers? I’ve read every legend connected to these locations. If there’s a hidden clue, a reference, a mythological hint—I'll know it.”

Cipher’s knowledge of lore would be invaluable in uncovering hidden passages, understanding ancient languages, and deciphering symbols. In a game where every detail could reveal a clue, Cipher’s encyclopedic mind was just what Leo needed.

  Then Nova, the Rogue Explorer

Nova, or Ryan, was a rogue player, known for his fearless, almost reckless approach to exploration. He thrived in open-world games, priding himself on reaching places no one else dared to go. Nova had a knack for finding hidden routes, shortcuts, and uncharted regions, and his character build in Stone Chronicles was centered on agility, stealth, and high endurance. He was an expert at avoiding traps and navigating perilous terrain.

When Leo reached out, Nova’s response was brief but confident. “If there’s a way in, I’ll find it. Doesn’t matter where the Megaliths are—I’ll get us to every one of them.”

Nova’s exploration skills would be critical, especially in areas like Lunmeris, with its fog-covered islands, and Eidryssa’s phosphorescent underwater spires. Leo knew that Nova’s abilities could be the difference between reaching the locations safely or getting caught in traps.

Leo wasn't sure how essential production skills would factor into team play. However, he decided it would not hurt to have a savvy Mechanic join them. So he enlisted Forge, the Engineer.

Forge, whose real name was Ashwin, was an engineer in real life, and he’d applied his knowledge of mechanics and technology to the gaming world with startling success. Known for his inventive approach to problem-solving, Forge specialized in crafting weapons, designing traps, and finding ways to overcome the most complex obstacles. In Stone Chronicles, he was a master craftsman, capable of creating armor, weapons, and gadgets that few players even knew existed.

When Leo met him, Forge had just finished creating a protective spell for his team, something he said was inspired by ancient Mayan rituals. “You need tools to survive in this game, Leo,” he’d said, his voice calm but insistent. “I can make them. Gear, weapons, anything that’ll give us an edge. Just leave it to me.”

Forge’s expertise would be essential in realms like Rapa Nui, where traps were embedded into the landscape, and Karandor, where hostile creatures were rumored to roam.

He also enlisted Valkyrie, the Guardian.

The final member of Leo’s team was Valkyrie, or Zara. Known for her tenacity, Valkyrie was a defensive player, a master of protective spells and shields. Her real-world background as a paramedic had made her an invaluable support player in gaming, skilled in healing and protecting her teammates. Her reputation in Stone Chronicles was that of an unbreakable wall, someone who could face the strongest attacks and protect her team no matter the odds.

When they spoke, her tone was reassuring, yet confident. “You’re going to need a shield,” she said simply. “Someone who can protect you while you go after those keys. I’m your shield, Leo. Let me keep the rest of the team alive.”

Valkyrie would be essential in places like Antartica’s icy labyrinth, where endurance was key, and Gunung Padang, with its dangerous, lightning-filled valleys. She’d keep the team strong and steady through the game’s toughest challenges.

  Team Assembled.

With his team finally assembled, Leo felt a rush of excitement and trepidation. Each player was skilled, intelligent, and driven in ways that set them apart from the typical Stone Chronicles player. They weren’t just people who logged on to escape reality; they saw the game as a journey, a mystery, something that touched a part of their souls.

Almost all of them were outcasts from the world’s first teams in previous versions of the game. These were the skilled, creative players who had been brought in whenever elite teams got stuck on a level or needed a strategic edge. But after they’d solved the puzzle or cleared the level, they were often pushed aside, left out of the rewards or recognition.

They’d grown tired of being used as tools, only to be set aside once they’d served their purpose. It was no surprise that each of them had messaged Leo before the flood of DMs came in after his name was announced. They were players who truly loved the game, who saw it as more than a competition but as an experience to be shared.

Leo felt a kinship with them. They weren’t in it for fame or bragging rights; they were in it for the journey, the sense of discovery, and the mystery. These were people he could really see himself gaming with, people who might even become friends along the way.

As he set up their group chat, Leo scanned the list of his five chosen members. Together, they seemed to form a well-rounded team, each person filling a distinct role, each skill set complementing the others. They were starting off strong, with a balanced mix of strength, strategy, and skill that he felt confident would carry them far. Yet, as he reviewed their profiles, a nagging thought crept in, a sense that perhaps he should consider one more member.

A seventh player, he thought, mulling over the idea. Six players was more than enough, he reasoned; in fact, it was rare for a team to exceed that number, as large groups could sometimes be unwieldy, harder to manage, and less adaptable in the heat of a challenge. But something about this journey felt different, as though they might encounter obstacles that required an unexpected, yet-to-be-defined skill.

He had no idea what role this potential seventh player would fill, or even if such a person existed yet. But he knew enough to trust his instincts. Leaving that spot open for now felt right, as though whoever was meant to fill it would reveal themselves when the time was right.

For now, he would focus on the team he had, the five players who had reached out to him, each with their own strengths, backgrounds, and quirks. They were more than capable of taking on the journey through The Artic together.

As their greetings and strategy discussions filled the chat, Leo felt the energy of their combined excitement. It was a feeling he hadn’t anticipated, a sense of belonging and unity. For the first time since his father’s passing, he felt he wasn’t alone in his quest.

After hours in the game, Leo finally took off his headset, blinking as his eyes adjusted to the dim light of his apartment. His head buzzed with the excitement of the session and the conversations with his new team, the chatter of strategies and theories echoing in his mind. He set the headset down carefully, letting the intensity of the game world fade as he stood up and stretched, feeling the tension in his shoulders ease slightly.

He wandered into the kitchen, digging around for leftovers. Finding some pasta, he popped it in the microwave and leaned back against the counter, the hum of the appliance filling the quiet space around him. The thrill of the session still lingered, but a sense of calm was settling in as well. Winter break stretched ahead of him, and for the first time in what felt like forever, he was looking forward to the weeks ahead.

The microwave beeped, and he grabbed the warm bowl, stirring absentmindedly as he replayed moments from the session in his mind. His new teammates had felt like old friends, the conversation flowing easily, the excitement shared among them. They were misfits in a way, people who understood the thrill of uncovering secrets and hidden paths, of pushing past the boundaries of the game.

Just as he lifted the first forkful of pasta to his mouth, he heard a loud bang, and his front door crashed open. The bowl slipped from his hand, shattering on the floor, the sound muffled by the heavy thud of footsteps. Before he could react, two figures in dark clothing and masks lunged toward him, grabbing his arms in a vice-like grip.

â€śHey!” Leo struggled, panic flaring as he tried to pull free. “What—who are you?”

They didn’t answer. One of the intruders produced a cloth and pressed it over his mouth and nose. Leo’s world tilted, his senses blurring as a dizzying wave of darkness swept over him. He fought to keep his eyes open, his mind racing, but the drug took hold, and he slipped into unconsciousness.

  Journey into Darkness.

When Leo finally came to, he was aware of a low rumbling, the sensation of movement beneath him. His head pounded, and his vision blurred as he opened his eyes, the dim interior of a van coming into focus. His hands were tied behind his back, and a rough cloth covered his mouth, muffling his attempts to speak. He shifted, trying to make sense of his surroundings, but the darkness around him offered no clues.

The van hit a bump, jolting him against the metal wall. Panic flared again, sharper this time, as he realized he was trapped. The voices of his captors, speaking in low, hurried tones, floated through the darkness.

â€śDid we get the right one?” a voice asked, rough and tense.

â€śPositive ID,” came the reply. “It’s him. The one who unlocked the first key.”

Leo’s heart raced, a mixture of fear and confusion churning within him. They knew about the game? About the key? But how?

The van continued to rumble forward, and Leo’s mind spun, trying to piece together how his discovery in The Lost Megalith could have led to this. The game had felt real, visceral, and the secrets he’d uncovered had felt strangely personal. But to have people in the real world, dangerous people, know about it? His mind wrestled with questions that had no answers.

Eventually, the van slowed, and he felt it come to a stop. He heard the doors open, felt hands grab him roughly, dragging him out of the vehicle. The blindfold around his eyes was removed, and he blinked against the sudden light, his vision adjusting to reveal his surroundings.

They were in a dimly lit underground chamber, the walls lined with strange markings and symbols that looked eerily similar to those he’d seen in the game. Shadows danced across the room, cast by flickering torches that lent an otherworldly glow to the space. Leo shivered, the cold air of the chamber wrapping around him like a shroud.

He barely had time to take in the strange room before a figure stepped forward, and he felt a jolt of recognition. She was tall, her presence commanding, and her face was both familiar and unfamiliar. She looked exactly like the figure from the Chamber of Memories, the one who had spoken to him with such kindness and urgency.

The woman’s voice was calm but firm as she addressed him. “Leo Adams, welcome. You’ve been chosen.”

He stared at her, disbelief and confusion warring within him. “Chosen? Chosen for what?” His voice was hoarse, his throat dry.

She smiled slightly, a look of understanding in her eyes. “To fulfill a legacy, Leo. You’re here because you’re part of something far greater than you know. I am Maera, leader of the Wesirians—a rebel group dedicated to preserving the knowledge that others want to keep hidden. The game you’ve been playing is not just a game. It’s a gateway, a way for us to find those who are meant to help us in our mission.”

Leo’s head swam, a mix of memories and questions tumbling through his mind. Maera… the same name, the same presence he had felt in the game. It was impossible, and yet here she was, standing before him in the flesh.

She continued, her gaze steady. “We’ve been waiting for someone like you, Leo. Your discovery in The Lost Megalith marked you as a seeker, someone connected to the truths hidden in this world. The trials you’ve passed, the keys you’ve unlocked—these are not coincidences. They’re part of a legacy, passed down through generations, and you are meant to be a part of it.”

Leo’s voice was barely a whisper. “What… what does that mean?”

Maera’s expression softened, a glimmer of compassion in her eyes. “It means that the visions you’ve seen, the symbols that have called to you, are echoes of your own ancestry. Your family has been connected to these mysteries for generations. Your father knew this, though he tried to protect you from it.”

Leo’s thoughts swirled. His father had hinted at something larger, something beyond what he’d been able to understand. But he’d never expected it to lead to this—a rebel group, an ancient legacy, and now this strange woman claiming that he was destined to be a part of it all.

Maera stepped closer, her voice dropping to a softer tone. “You’re one of the few who can access these truths, Leo. The Wesirians have protected this knowledge for centuries, but now, there are others who seek to erase it. They see the knowledge as a threat, something that could disrupt their control. They know about the keys, the megaliths, and the legacy your father fought to keep hidden.”

Leo shook his head, still struggling to process everything she was saying. “I… I don’t understand. Why me?”

Maera placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, her gaze unwavering. “Because you carry the bloodline of those who first unlocked these mysteries. Your ancestry is woven into the secrets of the megaliths. The visions you’ve seen are memories, echoes of a history you’re only just beginning to remember.”

Leo swallowed, his mind reeling with the weight of her words. All this time, he had thought he was simply playing a game, diving into ancient mysteries for the thrill of it. But now he realized that the connection he felt was deeper, that he was being pulled into something far larger, a responsibility he could neither fully understand nor refuse.

As the silence stretched, Maera took a step back, her expression growing serious. “We need your help, Leo. With your skill, your connection to the knowledge, and your unique understanding of the game, you’re one of the few who can complete the journey. We are fighting to preserve this knowledge, to keep it from those who would destroy it. And with you on our side, we stand a chance.”

He took a shaky breath, feeling the weight of her words settle on his shoulders. The game, the visions, his father’s secrets—all of it was real. And now he was being asked to join a fight he hadn’t even known existed.

As he looked into Maera’s steady gaze, he felt a spark of purpose reignite within him, a strange sense of destiny taking root. He didn’t know where this path would lead, but he understood one thing: there was no turning back.
