Introduction

  Note to Readers:

The story of The Crystal Method begins in Chapter 1. However, if you choose to skip the following introduction sections, you will miss key background details about the world of Virelda, its societies, and the multiverse that binds them all together. The introduction serves to provide rich context on the world’s history, cultures, and the mystical crystals that fuel both magic and technology. While you can dive straight into the action, the information here will enhance your understanding of the events and characters as they unfold.

  Virelda

The planet of Virelda is a world of striking contrasts and beauty, its surface split by a deep, unfathomable chasm that stretches from pole to pole. This chasm, known as the Great Rift, is not just a geographical divide but a scar on the planet's surface, as if the world itself had been torn apart in some ancient cataclysm. The Rift’s sheer cliffs drop into a seemingly bottomless abyss; their dark stone walls carved over millennia by the planet’s tectonic forces. At its narrowest points, the chasm is several miles across, and at its widest, it stretches to over a hundred miles. The air above the chasm is always alive with a faint hum, the remnant energy of the dimensional portals that flicker and hum within its depths, opening gateways to other worlds.

To the west of the chasm lies an endless forest that spans the entire hemisphere of Virelda, teeming with life. This forest, known as the Emerald Expanse, is ancient and towering, its canopy reaching so high that it creates a perpetual twilight below. The trees here are unlike anything found on other planets, their trunks as wide as the largest skyscrapers in distant human cities, their roots plunging deep into the rich, black earth. These roots tap into vast underground reservoirs of water, and the trees serve as living aqueducts, storing and circulating the planet's precious water through their immense vascular systems. From the ground, it is impossible to see the sky; only faint beams of light penetrate the thick canopy, giving the forest floor an otherworldly glow.

The trees themselves are a remarkable sight, with bark that ranges from dark mahogany to deep, almost iridescent greens. Their branches twist and wind in complex patterns, intertwining with one another, creating natural bridges that link the treetops. Massive vines hang down from the branches, some thicker than a person’s body, and they are often used by the inhabitants as ropes or even walkways. The air here is heavy with the scent of moss, flowers, and the rich loam of the earth. Every breath is filled with the essence of life, for the forest pulses with energy—an ancient, almost sentient presence that has sustained the Sylin people for generations.

Above, cities of wood, vine, and leaf stretch across the canopy, the Sylin having learned to build their homes among the trees themselves. These cities are delicate yet resilient, their structures suspended hundreds of meters above the forest floor, held together by intricate systems of rope and vines. Platforms, rope bridges, and suspended walkways connect homes, markets, and gathering spaces, creating a vertical society where movement between levels is as important as moving across the land. From above, the cities look like a vast web, organically woven into the natural architecture of the trees. Great Windrakes, large bird-like creatures domesticated by the Sylin, soar between the treetops, their colorful feathers catching the light as they carry messages and goods between cities.

On the other side of the Great Rift lies an entirely different world. Here, the forest gives way to a vast desert, known as the Crystal Sands, a harsh and unforgiving landscape of shifting dunes and jagged rock formations. The sand is fine, almost powdery, and ranges in color from deep oranges and reds to pale yellows and whites, depending on the region. The heat here is intense, and the sun bakes the surface of the desert during the day, while at night, temperatures plummet, leaving the sands cool to the touch.

Scattered across the desert are massive crystal formations, some jutting out of the sand like jagged teeth, others half-buried beneath the surface. These crystals come in every imaginable size and color—some are small and delicate, while others are enormous, towering structures that reflect the sunlight in dazzling displays of light and color. They are the lifeblood of the Ashani, who mine them from deep beneath the desert floor. These crystals are highly prized not only for their beauty but for their ability to power the interdimensional gateways that connect Virelda to the wider multiverse.

The Ashani live in small, isolated communities scattered throughout the desert. They build their homes just beneath the surface, where they can trap what little moisture the ground retains. Their dwellings are modest, often consisting of interconnected tunnels and chambers carved into the sandstone, where the temperature is more bearable than on the surface. Despite their harsh environment, the Ashani have developed a unique culture centered around the crystals they harvest. These crystals are not merely a resource—they are sacred objects that the Ashani believe hold the essence of life itself.

The Ashani themselves are as hard and resilient as the land they inhabit. Their bodies are almost rock-like in appearance, with skin that is rough and textured like stone, yet still flexible and capable of healing. Though they require water to survive, they have adapted to need far less than most other species, relying on moisture trapped in underground pockets and the limited rainfall that sometimes graces the desert. The Ashani reproduce in a unique way—through a process of shedding rock-like particles from their bodies that eventually form into new beings. These beings are nurtured within the community until they reach maturity, at which point they begin the process of shedding their own particles to create the next generation.

The Ashani’s names reflect their place in society, with the number of syllables indicating their status. Higher-ranking individuals have shorter names, often no more than a single syllable, while lower-ranking individuals have longer names. As an Ashani rises in status, they shed syllables from their name, much like they shed the particles that form new life.

The Great Rift itself is a place of danger and mystery. Its towering cliffs are pockmarked with caves and tunnels, many of which lead to deeper, unexplored levels of the planet. The Rift’s depths are home to ancient, forgotten relics of civilizations long past, as well as powerful crystals that have yet to be fully understood. The air within the chasm is often filled with a strange, ethereal light—faint glimmers of energy from the dimensional portals that flicker in and out of existence within its depths. These portals are what allow the Airship Trading Empire to dominate trade across the planet, connecting Virelda to countless other worlds and dimensions.

The Empire’s airships are a remarkable sight—massive, majestic vessels that float effortlessly through the skies, their sails billowing in the wind as they glide above the Great Rift. These ships are constructed from lightweight metals and reinforced with magic-infused crystals, allowing them to travel great distances without the need for traditional fuel. The ships dock at enormous fortresses carved into the cliffs of the chasm, where the Empire’s neutral trading hubs control the flow of goods between the Sylin and the Ashani. Water from the Sylin’s forest is traded for the Ashani’s crystals, maintaining a fragile balance that ensures both societies continue to thrive.

Yet beneath this carefully maintained equilibrium, tensions simmer. The Sylin and Ashani have little contact with each other, their societies divided by both geography and culture. The Ashani view the Sylin’s reliance on the forest as a weakness, while the Sylin see the Ashani’s harsh desert existence as a form of barbarism. The Airship Trading Empire, though neutral, holds immense power, and their control of the planet’s most valuable resources gives them leverage over both societies. Rumors of unrest and rebellion circulate in the cities of the Sylin and the desert outposts of the Ashani, and many fear that the fragile peace between the two peoples could shatter at any moment.

Virelda, with its contrasting landscapes and delicate balance of power, is a world on the brink of change. The Great Rift may divide the planet physically, but the forces at play within its depths—and beyond—threaten to reshape the very fabric of this unique and precious world.
