26. Tricky Work

The entire squad had reached the place. Monsters were running amok, but thankfully, the civilians had been evacuated in time, and now a large magic barrier kept the monsters all in one large cage. It was a low tier gate, the usual skeletons gathered there.

"Ok, team! This is your first mission. Make sure to work together, and don’t be afraid; we have some experienced members on the lookout."

Tony’s words were not exactly comforting, but that didn’t stop John and Luke from bragging about how easy the mission would be. Luna was silently watching, and Lilith kept bothering Sebas, babbling on and on about how they ended up being on the same team.

Sebas did not react—he was cold, not even bothering himself to look her way. This didn’t sit right with her, and it ended with Sebas almost being kicked—lucky for him, his reflexes worked quite well.

Sebas made his way for the entrance, a hollow space where guards stood with weapons in hand. John and Luke, as much as they pretended to be strong, allowed Sebas to walk before them. He also passed Luna, who approached him.

"What do you think we should do?"

He glanced at her, thrown back by the sudden question.

"Why are you asking me this?"

She looked at him, not moving.

"Those guys are dickheads, that girl is not made for this, and that only leaves you. I’ve seen the way you walk; you’re not scared."

Sebas scoffed at the comment, pretending not to care, but being told that he’s got guts sure did a trick on him.

"Well, personally speaking, I think I could finish this alone, but we have to work as a team. Lility will stay in the back, healing those who are hurt, while you and John take to the frontlines. Luke should back us up with his magic, and I’ll be doing my thing, solo."

She smirked, crossing her arms together, leaning back on her right leg.

"You sure got guts, that’s for sure. Well, I guess I’ll do as you say."

She yelled for the others to gather, howling orders at them. None dared stand too close, while Sebas watched, a stunned expression laid bare on his face.

The others reluctantly obliged and followed. John and Luke glared at Sebas, who was too busy pretending they did not exist. He went on about his business, stepping in first and then making himself invisible.

The rest of the team got into formation, rushing the whole operation, since hundreds of undead beings swarming in wasn’t exactly nice.

  "Everyone, get ready!"

Luna took out a greatsword, a giant chunk of iron, and started swinging it around wildly, scattering dust and broken bones. John looked like a little kid with his longsword, while Luke was casting long-range spells from behind. The frontline held well, but both Luna and John left too big of a gap between them, allowing some of the undead to pass through, reaching the rear.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

"Shit!" whispered Luna, trying to force her way back to them.

Luke screamed out, almost blasting them with his spells—along with himself, that is. Luke watched in anguish as the shadow of a blade cast itself over his very eyes, a moment in which he decided to close them for comfort. Little did he expect to hear bones breaking.

Sebas jumped out of a shadow on the ground, blocking the skeleton’s sword with his daggers. With a fine twist of his arm, the creature was no more. Luke found it awkward to look at Sebas, but the guy didn’t care.

Luna watched from afar, while John was slowly overwhelmed.

"Luna," called out Sebas, yelling to make sure everyone heard him, "go cover John, I got these guys."

She watched as he jumped up high, only to fall in their midst, running amok. His speed was something else, and he also had the strength to back it up.

An assassin doing that? Not a chance.

Their momentum was rising again, all of it happening once Sebas became active on the field. The guards watched, looking as the skeletons were reduced to nothing. Luna and Sebas had to take care of the others, seeing as they could barely hold on. Luke ran out of mana, and Lilith had no one to heal.

"It’s going well," said Tony, watching from outside the barrier. He was proud of it, but at the same time, his eyes followed every movement of Sebas.

His movements lack structure. They are strong, but they lack technique. Just who are you, Sebas?

Inside the dome, the subjugation process was almost over. The last remaining skeletons fell in one fell swoop. John could finally put his sword down, which he did with a thud. Sweat was running down his brow. Luna was tired, but she was in better shape than the others. Luke felt dizzy, a feeling of vertigo took hold of him.

Lilith watched as Sebas stood there, on a pile of corpses, larger than what the rest of the team had killed together. One thing was for sure, Sebas could barely warm up.

"Thank God this is over!", breathed out John, slowly getting up. He felt his arms go numb, flailing them around like a ragdoll would.

His eyes drifted over to Sebas, noticing that everyone stood in silence and watched him.

  "Just what is that guy?"

He couldn’t believe his own words, but they were true. Despite acting all high and mighty, he and Luke could barely keep up with the pace.

Luna laughed: "I sure don’t know. Assassin, don’t make me laugh."

Lilith watched from the back, thinking about something about Sebas not making sense. In her eyes, something about him became more of a mystery than before.

"Well, I guess we can leave now, right?" spoke Luke, his voice wavering, barely holding.

Luna picked both of those guys up, helping them out. The ground shook, halting them in place. Sebas watched as, before his eyes, another gate opened. His eyes fell on the giant skeleton. It was at least ten times his size, and its bones were thicker than a tree trunk.

The guards wanted to rush in, but Tony forbade them entrance.

"Make sure not to intervene unless I give you the order to."

Protesting was useless, so the commotion dimmed down as fast as it had started.

Inside, Sebas watched the giant undead make its way outside, glancing at the giant sword it bore. A chunk of iron would be a better way to call it.

"Welp, all that warmup was worth something."

Sebas got up, glancing at the creature’s level: 70.

  He smirked.

"Mark fought one at about the same level while being half my level. Guess I need to go a bit harder."
