Reactions to the movie Fight Club, after watching it again at age 32
When I was in my mid-twenties I loved David Fincher’s Fight Club. Like a lot of twenty-somethings, I thought it spoke to me and for me, to a certain extent. I dug the whole “corporations and posessions are bad” vibe. I dug the fighting and the male bonding stuff. I really resonated with the whole “sticking it to the man” ethos, because at that time I was working for The Man as it were.
In the interest of full disclosure, I now ownafewpieces of Ikea furniture/housewares in my home, which (the home)is significantly nicer than the one Tyler Durden lives in for most of the film. In fact, I just bought two cheap footstools from Ikea last week and they’re lovely. That’s not to say I’ve gone all “Edward Norton character pre-meeting the Brad Pitt character,” but still. Full disclosure.
In another bit of disclosure, I spent a decent part of my twenties living, to a certain extent, like some of the characters in Fight Club. I went through a boxing phase, and a pretty long playing-semipro-football phase, which I might still be in. In short, I got my a** whupped a lot, but also whupped the occasionall a**. It was fun. The male bonding was real. That part of the film still resonates. I also lived in pretty crappy houses, because they were all I could afford (see: working for the man while also being addicted to semipro football). Knowing full well that my crappy houses were still pretty nice (the house on Climax, not necessarily the one on Clemens), it’s still no fun to live in crappy, leaky, disgusting old houses.
Anyway. Here are some reactions to seeing the film again as a 32 year-old, which I realized pretty early on I probably shouldn’t have done (seeing it again). I felt the way I felt when I recently went to an amusement park one too many times…it ceased being fun. I realized I was over it, or maybe had outgrown it. Anyway, the reactions:
- Fincher is an amazing director. Yeah, much of what he did in the film that looked unique and cool has been ripped off to such an extent that it no longer looks unique and cool, but it was still a really good-looking, creativemovie.
- Thescript was heavy-handed and preachy, almost to thepoint of being ridiculous. This reaction pretty much speaks for itself but I’m ashamed at how much I didn’t notice this in my mid-twenties, when I was so busy thinking this movie was awesome.
- The movie was a little too “hardcore” and self-destructive for my ever-softening 32-year old constitution. That is, I have less of a stomach for violence and overall disturbingness. This film is full of both.
- My houses really weren’t that bad (see: above comments re houses).
- This really is a movie for young, idealistic people, not not-so-young people who have lived a little and lost some idealism. The idea of stealing human fat to make soap that I can then sell to big chain stores just doesn’t have the appeal that it once did. And I’m not really sad to see this kind of idealism go (puts feet on Ikea footstool).
- I can’t get done watching this movie and thank God for it because of the violence, sensuality, and hopelessness that it contains.
- Fight Club is the kind of movie you say you like just to convey a certain image or vibe about yourself, and I’ve found that I’m now too old to even continue attempting to convey that vibe. I am a little sad to see this go.
If you still love this movie it’s okay (not that you need my permission to like or not like a given movie). It’s still a great film, and will no doubt be a reference piece for years to come. Just wondered if anyone has had a similar reaction to this film.

I loved Fight Club as a 21 year old when it was released. I’ve not seen it for several years now and I keep thinking, maybe I’ll watch it again… I imagine your observations stack up just about right.

Ted!
Fight Club is one of my faveorite movies, but then I’m only 20 so it might wear off. But I do agree with some of what you said about what the movie portrays about hope and violence.
But I think I’ve got one better than portraying a the “Fight Club” vibe… I actually used this quote:
“Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.”
In a sermon at Bible college… minus the swearing of course. It is still my all time movie quote.

My outlook on “Fight Club” is definately different at age 28 than it was at age 19. I still dig the masculinity in an increasing effeminate culture vibe, but don’t dig all the rebellious, anarchy is cool stuff anymore.
I love it for being one of those few “waking up” movies about learning how to actually be alive again in a soul-crushing culture, big city, or job. I also like it for it’s honesty – “Fight Club” is Nihilistic, but it shows the logical consequences of both nihilism and anarchy – despair, the loss of the individual into a dangerous collective mass, & the destruction of relationships as a result. The main character ultimately decides he’s been heading down the wrong path and decides to change.
There isn’t that good of a resolution at the end, but as a Christian I take my own resolution out of it, while gleaning the actual Christian worldview parts of of the story. My favorite scene will always be Tyler Durden talking to the mini-mart clerk while holding a gun to his head. Most movies today just turn my brain off – Fight Club still gives me things to think about.

I agree, I’m only 19. This movie had a very creative script and the director made it very engaging but it didn’t satisfy me based on how good I’ve heard this movie was.
It is the type of movie that people say they like to define themselves to others. I was surprised at how much the film was lacking to me.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed it.
I’d like to see a review of the movie Requiem for a dream and American history X.

okay… i know this comment is wayyyy old but whatever.
I started writing something but decided I would counter-comment your numbers.
1) Agreed… simple enough.
2) The movie itself is based on a story that IS preachy. It would be hard to avoid putting this kind of feeling into this film and still have it maintain the effect it is supposed to have. It is supposed to be eerie in the sense that there is a guy with narcolepsy going around recruiting people for his club that plans social destruction. Upon reading that last sentence I think you can clearly look at the movie more as a piece of art and not a piece of preach-ery.
3) Well, I guess that is something I hope I don’t lose with age
4) My apartment isn’t that bad… but very close.
5) I guess if you were trying to imagine yourself as another character in this film you would have to be an idealist but to just watch the movie I don’t think it is a necessity. I think one thing you are missing about this movie is maybe not the whole, “Let’s destroy the corrupt overlords blah blah” whatever crap and the idea that maybe we are letting our items own us, instead of owning them (paraphrase from Tyler Durden). That kind of message seems very pure and one that can be embraced by all.
6) It may not be something that you can be thankful for… but there is an awful lot of that in reality so don’t put that as a criticism for a movie. Walt Disney made those feel good movies that you may just be wanting to see nowadays.
7) That’s just not a fair statement to make… come on.
Anywho that’s all I got for now without any revision or reading through it once.
